Effects of oral sodium phosphate solution, as a colon preparation agent, on the serum potassium level in patients undergoing colonoscopy at a Secondary Care Community Hospital

چکیده
Background Colonoscopy is the gold standard investigation for assessing of the intra-luminal colorectal pathology. Effective bowel preparation contributed efficient visualizing of the colon. Osmotic laxatives such as sodium phosphate (NaP) are commonly used for colonic preparation for colonoscopy. A meta-analysis suggested that NaP offered a more effective and more readily completed preparation than PEG-based regimes. However, the use of sodium phosphate solution has been shown to significantly reduce the serum potassium level which is likely to affect cardiac rhythm in particular by prolonging the QT interval. But this affect was not clinically meaningful in most of patients. Sodium phosphate (NaP) are commonly used for colonic preparation for colonoscopy in Phukieo Rural Hospital a secondary care community hospital, the effect of oral sodium phosphate solution, as a colon preparation agent, on the serum potassium level in patients undergoing colonoscopy was evaluated. นพินธต์น้ฉบบั

Comparing the effect of usual bowel preparation and sodium phosphates preparation method on patient acceptance under colonoscopy
Introduction: Colonoscopy is a method of endoscopy of lower gastrointestinal system which needs ‎proper colon preparation that allows proper assessment, diagnosis and treatment. There are different ‎methods of bowel preparation available. Therefore more research by critical nurses can result in ‎better care.‎ Objective: The aim of present study is to compare the routine metho...
متن کاملBowel preparation for colonoscopy: comparison of mannitol and sodium phosphate. Results of a prospective randomized study.
METHOD Eighty patients were prospectively randomized for precolonoscopic cleansing either with 750ml of 10% mannitol (Group M) or 180ml of a sodium phosphate preparation (Group NaP). Laboratory examinations before and after preparation on all patients included hemoglobin, hematocrit, sodium, potassium, phosphorous, calcium and serum osmolarity. A questionnaire was used to assess undesirable sid...
متن کاملOral sodium phosphate solution is a superior colonoscopy preparation to polyethylene glycol with bisacodyl.
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and patient tolerance of two bowel preparations for colonoscopy. METHODS Three hundred twenty-three consecutive patients undergoing colonoscopy were randomly assigned to receive either oral sodium phosphate, or 2 liters of polyethylene glycol solution preceded by the stimulant laxative bisacodyl. Patients were asked to record the effec...
متن کاملElectrolyte disorders following oral sodium phosphate administration for bowel cleansing in elderly patients.
BACKGROUND Oral sodium phosphate is currently used for colon preparation prior to colonoscopy or barium enema. Sodium phosphate induces hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia, and hypokalemia. Elderly patients are at an increased risk for phosphate intoxication due to decreased glomerular filtration rate, medication use, and systemic and gastrointestinal diseases. We investigated these electrolyte dis...
متن کاملEffect of Polyethylene Glycol and Senna Bowel Preparation in Dogs on Some Hematological and Serum Biochemical Parameters
Background: Colonoscopy is the preferred procedure for diagnosis of large-bowel diseases in dogs. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is the most commonly used laxative for colonic cleansing. Senna has been used in traditional medicine as a laxative and an aid to treat constipation. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of senna as an alternative or adjunct to polyethylene glycol s...
